Description
Betason G Ointment is a powerful topical medication used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions where there is also a bacterial infection, or where there is a strong risk of such an infection. This ointment combines the potent anti-inflammatory action of a corticosteroid with the broad-spectrum antibacterial effect of an antibiotic. Each gram typically contains:
- Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% w/w: A highly effective corticosteroid that rapidly reduces inflammation, swelling, redness, and itching associated with various dermatoses. It works by suppressing the immune and inflammatory responses in the skin.
- Gentamicin Sulfate 0.1% w/w: An aminoglycoside antibiotic that targets and eliminates a wide range of susceptible bacteria commonly found on the skin, preventing and treating bacterial infections.
This dual-action formula makes Betason G Ointment particularly suitable for conditions such as:
- Infected Eczema (Dermatitis): Where eczema patches have become secondarily infected with bacteria.
- Infected Psoriasis: To manage inflamed psoriatic plaques that show signs of bacterial infection.
- Infected Allergic Skin Rashes: When allergic reactions are complicated by bacterial growth.
- Other Inflammatory Dermatoses: When bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed alongside significant inflammation.
The ointment base provides a protective barrier, helps retain moisture, and ensures prolonged contact of the active ingredients with the skin, which can enhance their therapeutic effect.
Important Considerations:
- Prescription Only: Betason G Ointment is a prescription-only medication (POM) and should be used strictly as directed by a doctor.
- Short-Term Use: Due to the potent corticosteroid and the antibiotic component, this ointment is typically prescribed for short courses of treatment to minimize the risk of side effects like skin thinning (atrophy), development of antibiotic resistance, and potential systemic absorption.
- Avoid Misuse: Do not use for conditions other than those prescribed, or on fungal or viral infections as it may worsen them.
- Avoid Sensitive Areas: Avoid prolonged use on the face, groin, armpits, or under occlusive dressings (e.g., bandages, tight clothing), as these areas are more susceptible to corticosteroid side effects and increased absorption.
- Potential Side Effects: Local side effects can include burning, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acneiform eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, skin atrophy, striae, and miliaria. Systemic absorption leading to adrenal suppression is possible with extensive or prolonged use.
- Resistance: Improper or prolonged use of the antibiotic component (Gentamicin) can lead to the development of antibiotic resistance.
