Description

Benzyl Penicillin Sodium 1.00 MIU Injection (also known as Penicillin G Sodium 1,000,000 IU) is a potent, narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It is supplied as a sterile powder for reconstitution, designed for intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection after dissolution with an appropriate sterile solvent (e.g., Water for Injections BP or Sodium Chloride 0.9%).

This antibiotic works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, which are essential for cross-linking peptidoglycan strands. This disruption leads to a weakened cell wall, causing the bacterial cell to lyse and die. Benzyl Penicillin is effective against a wide range of susceptible Gram-positive bacteria (such as various Streptococcus species, Staphylococcus species, and Clostridium species) and some Gram-negative cocci (like Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae).

It is a critical treatment for severe infections where rapid and high penicillin levels are required. Common indications include:

  • Severe bacterial infections: Such as septicaemia (blood poisoning), meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes), endocarditis (infection of the heart lining), and severe pneumonia.
  • Specific infections: Including diphtheria, gas gangrene, tetanus, anthrax, leptospirosis, Lyme disease, and certain complications of syphilis and gonorrhoea.
  • Prophylaxis: In certain surgical procedures or for preventing group B streptococcal infection in newborns.

Important Considerations:

  • Allergy: A history of hypersensitivity to penicillins or cephalosporins is a major contraindication due to the risk of severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
  • Administration: Must be prepared and administered by a healthcare professional. Dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of infection, patient age, weight, and renal function.
  • Monitoring: Patients should be monitored for signs of allergic reactions, electrolyte imbalances (due to sodium content, especially in high doses or in patients with renal/cardiac issues), and renal function.
