Description
Benduric 5mg Tablets contain Bendroflumethiazide 5mg, a potent thiazide diuretic (often referred to as a “water pill”). This medication works primarily on the kidneys to increase the excretion of water, sodium, and chloride from the body. It achieves this by inhibiting the reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions from the distal convoluted tubules of the nephron, leading to increased urine production (diuresis). This reduction in fluid volume helps to lower blood pressure and reduce swelling.
Benduric 5mg is primarily prescribed for the treatment and management of:
- Essential Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): By reducing the total fluid volume in the body and potentially causing vasodilation, it helps to lower elevated blood pressure.
- Oedema (Fluid Retention): It is used to reduce swelling caused by excess fluid accumulation in conditions such as:
- Congestive heart failure
- Nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder)
- Cirrhosis of the liver
- Pre-menstrual oedema (fluid retention before periods)
The 5mg strength is commonly used for the initial management of oedema. For hypertension, lower doses (e.g., 2.5mg) are often sufficient. It is typically taken once daily, usually in the morning, to avoid frequent urination during the night. Regular monitoring of electrolytes (especially potassium), kidney function, and blood pressure is important during treatment.
