BEMPETOL 180mg Tablets contain Bempedoic Acid 180mg, a novel medication used to significantly lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), often referred to as “bad cholesterol.” Bempedoic acid is an adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase (ACL) inhibitor, which means it works by blocking an enzyme (ACL) in the liver that is crucial for the synthesis of cholesterol, upstream of the HMG-CoA reductase pathway (where statins act). This unique mechanism of action leads to a reduction in cholesterol production, resulting in lower levels of LDL-C in the bloodstream.
BEMPETOL 180mg is primarily prescribed as an adjunct to diet and other lipid-lowering therapies (such as statins), or alone for patients who are unable to tolerate or are not taking statins. Its main indications include:
- Primary hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol), including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).
- To lower the risk of major cardiovascular events (like heart attack and coronary revascularization) in patients with established cardiovascular disease or those at high risk for a cardiovascular event who cannot take or are not taking statin therapy.
This medication helps patients reach their LDL-C goals, especially those who have not achieved adequate reduction with maximum tolerated statin therapy or who experience statin-associated muscle side effects.
