Description
Artesun 60mg Injection contains 60mg of Artesunate as its active ingredient. Artesunate is a potent, rapidly acting antimalarial drug derived from artemisinin, a compound isolated from the Artemisia annua plant. It is a powerful schizonticide, meaning it quickly kills the malaria parasites (including drug-resistant strains) within infected red blood cells by generating free radicals. Its swift action and high efficacy against all erythrocytic stages of the parasite make it the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended first-line treatment for severe malaria.
This injectable formulation is crucial for managing life-threatening cases of severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria in both adults and children, especially when oral treatment is not feasible due to the severity of the infection (e.g., impaired consciousness, vomiting). Artesun 60mg rapidly reduces the parasite load, helping to quickly alleviate severe symptoms and significantly improve patient outcomes and survival rates.
Artesun 60mg is typically supplied as a sterile powder for injection, accompanied by its respective solvent (e.g., sodium bicarbonate solution) for reconstitution and sometimes a diluent (e.g., sodium chloride solution or 5% glucose) for further dilution before administration. This medication must be prepared and administered by a qualified healthcare professional, either intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM), in a medical facility. After initial parenteral treatment, patients are generally switched to a full course of an oral artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) to complete their malaria treatment and prevent relapse.
